Musical Nationalism for the 21st Century: From Andrade’s Archive to A Barca’s Repertoire
Keywords:
Mário de Andrade, popular Brazilian music, cultural nationalism
Abstract
This paper compares the first album of the São Paulo based group A Barca to Mário de Andrade’s musical nationalism in the early 20th century, which inspired the contemporary group. Rather than precisely replicating the original sources, A Barca creates a hybrid cultural form that blurs the constructed distinctions between popular and erudite, traditional and modern. By analyzing A Barca’s project, this paper addresses ongoing regional dynamics within Brazilian culture and the problematic constructs of “authenticity” and “popular”.
