Abstract

This essay proposes a reevaluation of Natália Correia’s first novel of 1946, Anoiteceu no Bairro, in the context of the literary and artistic tendencies of the 1930-50s in Portugal associated with the literary movements of neo-realism, presencismo and surrealism. I contend that Correia’s novel, later suppressed by the author as well as by neo-realist literary critics, innovated the neo-realist textual code through a synthesis between two literary genres: the novel and the drama.
