Abstract

I will organize my present analysis around Jacob Burckhardt’s formulation and Alfedo Bosi’s reception of the idea that “power is in itself evil” (die Macht an sich böse ist), which Burckhardt repeated as a kind of mantra throughout his historiographical reflections.
