Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, Stanford University

Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht is the Albert Guérard Professor in Literature in the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages at Stanford University. While his main areas of academic teaching and writing lie in the literary and philosophical traditions of Spain, France, and the German-speaking nations, he has developed and tried to cultivate a fascination for Brazilian life and history since, in 1977, he was first invited to the Pontifícia Universidade Católica in Rio de Janeiro.
